Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Director of Instructional Design for the Center for Online & Hybrid Learning and Instructional Technologies. This position will supervise a large team of instructional designers to ensure the production of courses that are both aligned with programmatic outcomes and established design values for instructional programming, as well as, advise on the creation and/or use of digital resources, including software, multimedia, and collaboration tools, to support the educational goals. The key duties of this position are the following:
Provides extensive consultation on the design, development, implementation, and assessment of learner-centered courses in the face-to-face, hybrid, and online learning environments.
Oversees the collaboration with faculty to create high quality instructional materials, including graphics, 3D technology, and audio/video.
Facilitates meetings with faculty groups and/or project teams about improving curriculum, instruction, and learning through the use of instructional technology;
Identifies the pedagogical and technological best practices needed to maintain a consistently high quality of instruction, effectively execute curricular mission, and work with faculty to articulate the goals, assessments, activity paths, learning objectives and content for new courses.
Leads the instructional design team to plan, prepare, and present workshops on software applications, instructional design best practices, course management systems, and other technology topics by developing support materials and documentation to assist faculty in using instructional technologies.
Collaborates with the Assistant Director of IT and Multimedia Facilities Specialist to ensure smooth delivery of online technology and support services University wide.
Develops strategies to work closely with faculty in the use of the existing University learning management systems, including but not limited to Blackboard, Canvas, Coursera, Moodle, Sakai, etc.
Explores and supports the use of instructional design theory, instructional technology, web based content delivery tools, and media to enhance the online learning experience.
Performs various other tasks and duties as assigned to support the Online and Hybrid Learning.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a Master's degree instructional design, curriculum/instructional development, instructional technology, or a related field.
Also requires at least six years of related experience in higher education with curriculum development and instructional design.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires extensive knowledge of contemporary and emerging learning theories, instructional theories, practices, and their applications.
Strong conceptual, planning and project management skills required.
Must have the ability to develop and present instructional materials, assess technology and software programs and identify advantages and limitations of using various technologies for instructional purposes.
Requires strong leadership, interpersonal, communication and organizational skills and the ability to work with faculty and staff with diverse backgrounds and perspectives on the use of technology in a variety of learning environments.
Extensive Online Instructional Design experience and skills required.
Writing and Curriculum development and Project Management experience required.
Extensive experience with educational technology and Learning Management Systems, preferably Blackboard, Canvas, Coursera, Moodle, and Sakai.
Strongly preferred master's degree with additional advanced degree knowledge and experience with design and learning environment.
