This position provides management for an education, research &/or operations program/project, recommending goals, assessing feasibility and ongoing performance along with providing subject matter expertise in the field of data science.
Under general direction of the Director of the Master of Science in Analytics program, this half-time position offers abundant opportunities for intellectual challenges, interactions with students, and working on many analytics-based projects.
Northwestern University’s Master of Science in Analytics program produces graduates who are exceptionally well equipped to harness and communicate the full value of data to the organizations they serve. The degree immerses students in a comprehensive and applied curriculum exploring the underlying data science, data engineering, and business of analytics. This role would facilitate and advise 16-20 high-level, industry-supplied data science projects, along with several extra-curricular research engagements offered to master’s students each academic year. In addition to guiding the students in their project work, this individual would help shape the diversity and quality of each incoming cohort and help the program to refine its mission through interaction with corporations, faculty, and students.
This is a 1-year term appointment eligible for renewal dependent on available funding.
Ensures that program/project mission, values, guidelines, policies & procedures are implemented & maintained.
Communication, Outreach & Recruitment
Strengthens partnerships with external resources by defining, promoting and marketing benefits of participation and involvement to the organization.
Creates and nurtures relationships with organizations to develop a network of enthusiastic organizations engaged via active participation in the success of program/project.
Corporate engagement/solicitations on behalf of the MSiA program.
Evaluates the success of program collaboration with industry partners and helps improve this critical part of the program’s curriculum year-over-year.
Reports metrics back to Director and helps overhaul/improve the project sponsorship process annually.
Coordinates programming, educational, student, alumni, workshops, meetings, etc. including speakers, agendas, etc.
Develops plans and arranges meetings, workshops, events, etc. designed to exchange information, promote research objectives, and to build internal and external relationships within NU.
Manages program/project curriculum, seminars, presentations, workshops, learning experiences, chat rooms, websites, social networking, etc. based on goals/objectives.
Assist initiating and organizing corporate engagements and industry conferences (MSiA)
Advises students regarding admissions, academic, career and development matters.
Reads & evaluates admissions files and participates in candidate selection.
Advising student in-class projects (capstone, practicum, etc.) and corporate engagement/solicitations (MSiA); advising student extra-curricular projects (MSiA) – this requires a high level of subject matter expertise and an understanding of the tools and techniques used in industry partnerships.
Improve student programming skills through feedback and practice sessions.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Needs subject matter expertise in data science and relevant technologies
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
Programming knowledge (some combination of R, Python, Java); experience with big data tools such as Hadoop, Spark; visualization experience (Tableau, D3).
Knowledge of data structures and database management.
Project management experience; ability to work directly with industry partners.
Experience in academic environment, particularly in an advising or instruction capacity.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)
Master’s degree in related field (CS, IE, Statistics, Mathematics, etc.)
PhD or MS and equivalent work experience in an related field
Experience working in various operating system environments (Mac, Linux and PC)
1-2 years of related experience.
Ability to maintain effective internal and external working relationships.
Ability to manage time efficiently and perform effectively with minimal supervision.
Demonstrated experience with analytics tools and software
