McCarthy Tétrault is currently seeking a Director of Education to join our dynamic national Professional Resources team. This position can be based in any of our regional offices. Reporting directly to the Chief Professional Resources Officer, the Director of Education will be a strategic partner to lead, develop and implement the education curricula and program development for our lawyers, paraprofessionals and law students. The role involves working with various stakeholders, developing, assessing, enhancing and delivering high-quality legal and business education using a variety of methods and formats. This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to assume a professional resources leadership role managing a team of educational specialists and playing an integral role in the development and success of our firm. The primary responsibilities include the following:
Education Curricula/Program Development for our Lawyers, Paraprofessionals and Students
Leading the on-going development of Firm-wide and practice group education curricula and programming for both legal and non-legal skill development, including consideration of best teaching methods and materials.
Researching methods for more active learning as well as e-learning and integrating them into the delivery of the various curricula.
Working with the Chief Professional Resources Officer (CPRO) and National Leader, Practices (NLP) and other relevant stakeholders including Practice Group Leaders, members of regional Professional Resources Committees and other functional areas within the Firm on education strategy and curricula development.
Working with CLE partners on all aspects of legal education at Firm-wide and practice group levels for our professionals, including setting program priorities, identifying scope and frequency of delivery of content, selecting program faculty, and identifying appropriate audiences.
Working with relevant stakeholders, assessing and hiring outside faculty for in-house programs (as necessary) and working with them to customize programs to the Firm’s requirements and standards.
Coaching in-house faculty on course design, training and presentation skills/effectiveness.
Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) Compliance
Understanding the MCPD requirements of each Law Society where we have offices and the Barreau du Quebec.
Ensuring our lawyers can meet their requirements through a variety of Firm programs.
Supervising the Education Specialists ensuring they are
Providing guidance and oversight of MCPD eligibility in each Region of various programs developed and delivered to our lawyers.
Providing fulsome and timely reporting instructions to our lawyers as appropriate for each Region.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)/Education for our Clients
Working with the Director, Clients & Markets and the Clients & Markets Team, co-lead the Client CPD Program for audiences of multiple clients with a focus on enabling clients to meet all of their MCPD requirements in specified regions including providing the following:
Guidance on the requirements for accreditation of programs and other requirements under provincial regulatory continuing education regimes in each of British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec;
Input about programs that qualify for professionalism CPD credits required by the Law Society of Ontario and ‘client care’ or ‘ethics’ education hours required the Law Society of British Columbia.
Descriptions of MCPD accreditation for use in invitations and marketing materials in advance of programs, and reporting instructions and certificates of attendance sent to clients post program.
Supervising the work of the Client Education Specialist related to the following:
Tracking and reporting of all Client CPD programs (multi-client and single-client).
Regular ‘value’ reporting about Client CPD programs delivered to Bank clients and other priority clients as identified by Client Team Leaders.
Supporting the delivery of single-client programs to Banks and other priority clients.
Functional Area Management
Managing, coaching and mentoring, and evaluating direct reports, including setting annual objectives, regularly liaising on progress and conducting performance reviews.
Managing and continuing to develop and implement our Learning Management System (viLMS) or such other tracking/reporting system as might evolve to support all aspects of the delivery of the Education Portfolio to our lawyers, students and paraprofessionals.
Ensuring the McCarthy Tétrault Advance™ brand is applied on all work products including notices, invitations, agendas, reports, charts and outlines and being pro-active in identifying opportunities to include same in the work of others in the Professional Resources Group.
Leading and collaborating with members of the Education Team in the application of project management principles to all aspects of Team’s work with a view to contributing to ongoing efficiencies and consistencies in such work.
Assessing the effectiveness of and contributing to the ongoing development of all protocols, workflows, templates and tracking systems.
Participating and collaborating with CPRO, Senior Directors and Directors in the Professional Resources Group’s initiatives and projects, and with other MT Services groups on Firm projects, as requested.
Identifying and assuming responsibility for annual projects to continue to advance the Firm’s professional development/education agenda.
Managing the budget for the Education functional area.
Reporting annually to CPRO and NLP on metrics and status of all education deliverables with recommendations for priorities for the following year.
LLB combined with 10 years’ related experience including a combination of practice experience and leadership professional development in a professional services firm. Experience in a law firm with responsibility for building and delivering curricula and programming is preferred.
Experience working with and influencing senior internal clients (legal professionals and leadership).
Experience managing teams effectively across offices with the ability to create enthusiasm and cooperation within a team setting.
Excellent managerial and communication skills, including the ability to motivate and manage lawyers and staff.
Prior experience using an integrative and influencing approach to develop and implement programs that support and advance the business objectives of the organization.
Client service mindset and experience working with, and presenting to, executive-level clients.
Ability to handle an extensive workload with competing priorities and deadlines.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Strong strategy development, critical thinking, creativity, and business and political acumen.
Strong ability to anticipate and solve problems as they arise and implement conflict resolution in a constantly changing environment.
French language skills (written & verbal) an asset.
