Food banks are facing an increased need for their services, together with a changing food industry and a need to focus on long-term solutions to hunger in Canada. Many food banks across Canada are seeking out and implementing innovative programs and approaches to address hunger in ways that serve the particular needs of their communities. Food Banks Canada is looking to increase its support to the food bank network by connecting organizations to each other and to external expertise, to share learning, innovations, and best practices - to build a more effective network-wide response to hunger in Canada.
In a new role with Food Banks Canada, the Director of Learning & Knowledge Exchange will head up all national education, training, and knowledge exchange initiatives to support the food bank network across Canada. Reporting to the Chief Network Services Officer, the Director of Learning & Knowledge Exchange will build the overall learning and knowledge exchange strategy, including overseeing the development of plans and budgets, support the design of new learning programs and opportunities, and then roll up their sleeves to execute the work alongside one direct report. Current learning initiatives include support for a knowledge exchange platform, national conference, food safety training program, and webinars.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Lead the development of a learning strategy for, and in collaboration with, the food bank network, supported by operational plans, budgets and evaluation metrics to ensure delivery against the strategy
Identify opportunities to improve and expand learning and knowledge sharing among food bank organizations
Design learning initiatives that are measurable, sustainable, cost effective to deliver, and put the needs of provincial associations and food banks at the centre of the design process
Support the evolution and growth of an online knowledge exchange platform for food bank organizations
Support the development and sharing of content suited to a diverse audience
Facilitate training and education sessions
Manage events, including overseeing the execution of the Food Banks Canada biennial national conference and other learning events and conferences
Maintain collaborative, supportive relationships with food bank organizations in order to stay connected to insights, learnings, innovations, and opportunities to share learning among the network
Support the execution of Food Banks Canada’s internal learning goals within the national office
Qualifications and Competencies
A university degree and/or relevant work experience
Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of adult education concepts and techniques; curriculum development principles; and instructional system design gained through education and ongoing work experience
7+ years working in a learning, training and/or knowledge exchange function
Curious, enthusiastic and a passionate life-long learner
Collaborative, service-oriented, and adept at putting the needs of stakeholders at the centre of program design and delivery
Resilient and experimental with an ability to adapt to change, take risks, and course correct as needs and plans shift
An ability to be both strategic and tactical, with demonstrated experience building plans and budgets and seeing those through to successful execution
Excellent event management skills and experience planning conferences for 200+ delegates.
Strong communication, business writing, and content curation skills. Demonstrated experience and skill at group facilitation and presentations.
Highly adept at using technology (e.g. CMS and LMS) to support learning objectives and knowledge of innovative learning technologies. Online community management experience an asset
Experienced people manager, with a focus on building collaborative, supportive teams
Project management skills and experience
Bilingual (English & French) is highly desirable
